California artist Steve Maloney lent sophistication to NASCAR's biggest event when he creates original works at a trackside studio during the upcoming 50th running of the Daytona 500. Set beneath palm trees on a patch of green mere steps from Pit Road and the Daytona 500 Club, Maloney's tented studio will be the scene of blistering creativity as he fashions sculptural pieces from body work and components of Daytona Prototype and Grand Touring racecars collected during the recent 2008 Rolex 24 at Daytona and NASCAR sheet metal during the 50th running of the Daytona 500.

The 50th Daytona 500 shaped up as a creative coup for the artist Maloney. Along with his trackside studio, Maloney is currently exhibiting his This Is Where The Rubber Meets The Road series of 31 mixed-media works created from dinged, dented and shredded parts of actual NASCAR racecars. The exhibition, on display at the Daytona 500 Club, will continue thru April 1, 2008.

"Steve's unique work is something that every NASCAR fan should see and we're thrilled to have him here at 'The World Center of Racing'," said Daytona International Speedway President Robin Braig. "The trackside studio opened up a new perspective on the sport of auto racing to fans and art lovers alike, and we enjoyed seeing Steve in action throughout our historic weekend."

One of Maloney's trackside works has been auctioned for the benefit of Camp Boggy Creek, a year-round camp in Eustis, Florida dedicated to enriching the lives of children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses through experiences that are fun, empowering, safe and sound. There is no cost to attendees of Camp Boggy Creek, which since 1996 has served over 38,000 children and their family members. For details: www.boggycreek.org

Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Maloney has long been driven by an admiration for the vitality and velocity of America, especially as it is portrayed in fashion, advertising and the NASCAR phenomena. The artist is based in Rancho Santa Fe, California. For more information about Steve Maloney visit www.ThisIsWhereTheRubberMeetsTheRoad.com/
The Daytona 500 is NASCAR's richest and most prestigious race. "The Great American Race," which traditionally hosts a sell out crowd, has the biggest total payout in prize money for any motorsports event in the United States, surpassing the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400. "It's the ultimate race," said three-time Daytona 500 winner Jeff Gordon following his 2005 Daytona 500 victory. "There's just no better place to win at than Daytona. You know the sport's getting more competitive. It's getting bigger and it's just one of those races if you pick one, this is the one you want to win."
