Works from artist Steve Maloneys' "This Is Where The Rubber Meets The Road" series
November 21 - December 4, 2007
Coda Gallery, New York
Even as New York struggles to rein in traffic, the art of driving is cropping up within the city limits in new and intriguing forms. California artist Steve Maloney will be exhibiting selections from This Is Where The Rubber Meets The Road, his vibrant series of mixed-media works created from crashed sheet metal from actual NASCAR racecars, at the CODA Gallery in the Soho district of Manhattan. The exhibition is scheduled to run at CODA from November 21-December 4, concurrent with the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Champions Week, which motors into New York November 24-December 2, 2007.

Please drop by Steve Maloney's opening night reception at CODA Gallery on 472 Broome Street on Friday, November 30 at 4:00pm. A book signing is scheduled for Thursday, November 29th from 2 - 4 pm.

Emblematic of the velocity, danger and commercialization that drive race fans wild, Maloney created This Is Where The Rubber Meets The Road as a celebration not only of NASCAR, but of the spirit of America that runs through the sport's fuel lines. The wall-mounted and board-backed "contemporary sculptural collages as well as free standing sculptures" reveal the artist's innovative take on color and form, with dented sheet metal, tire scraps and scuffed advertising logos merged into dizzying arrays of previously mechanized beauty. While casual observers may need to rubberneck before realizing where the materials in works like Boggie Woogie No. 4, Homage To Mondrian came from, NASCAR fans will know in an instant.

A lifelong aficionado of auto racing who once did time behind a steering wheel in the Mexican 1000, Maloney insists that the abstract works in his series can be appreciated by race fans and art connoisseurs alike. "I've always worked to create contemporary art that excites the widest possible audience," he says.

"You don't have to be an art history major to understand This Is Where The Rubber Meet The Road. To me NASCAR is much more Americana then Andy Warhol's soup cans". Just look closely, and you can almost hear the starter shouting, 'Gentlemen, start your engines.'

The CODA show is a bit of a Big Apple coup for Maloney, as it will run concurrently with an exhibit of works from the artist's nine-painting Broadway series that is on display at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University in New York.

Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Maloney has long been driven by an admiration for the vitality and velocity of America, especially as it is portrayed in fashion, advertising and the NASCAR phenomena. The artist is based in California where he works from his studios in Rancho Santa Fe and Palm Springs.

After Coda Gallery in Palm Desert and Park City, Coda Gallery New York was established in 2000.
